Zero Tolerance

I'm making myself clear. Porn is porn is porn. There is no such thing as "good" porn, "feminist" porn, "woman centred" porn etc. I make no apology for my opinion. I'm feeling a little outnumbered these days though...

Bad news: you're very outnumbered.

Good news: you're not alone. There's a bunch of us who agree with you!

Some more good news: you are right.

In case being right doesn't keep you warm on a cold day: as Spotted Elephant said, you're not alone.

Porn generates as much revenue as football, baseball, basketball and hockey combined. Lumping all porn together is like lumping all sports together. It's not all the same.

Thanks you women! And pornstudent, yes porn IS all the same. Exploitative, revenue garnering, theoretical and practical rape. It DOES all come down to money.

Arriving late (as usual) to say you got me too.

Where do you find these geniuses Pippa?

I'm with you too. I think some women amend their views because it's easier than accepting the fact that their boyfriend is an ass.

I've done that, many moons ago but still....

An example: Guys who take pictures of their penises and anonymously send them to websites. No women involved. It's not theoretical or practical rape, hence, it is not the same as porn that is theoretical or practical rape. The website may or may not be making money.

The vast majority of porn is about money. Except for what we grow ourselves, so is the food we eat. But within the marketplaces of porn and food there is a lot of variety.

Maybe, by definition, all sports is competitive, but families can still enjoy a game of badminton while the Olympic gymnast risks permanent injury to win a medal. Some who think competition is harmful to individuals and society may never enjoy a game of anything.

So you can make porn acceptable by just extending the definition to things that patently are not porn? Ingenious!

Looks like now we can end hunger, genocide, imperialism, race hate...

Right there with you!

"I think some women amend their views because it's easier than accepting the fact that their boyfriend is an ass."

i'm in 150% agreement with this statement, jo!

I'm with you on this one too Pippa! As high a percentage as you like!

re: ass-boyfriends and porn - I accepted it in the past, but not any more! It's crazy how uneducated people are about porn. For a long time (and still somewhere in my niggle-pile) I conducted long rants at my boyfriend about his past use of porn, and about how it damages women and the lives that women lead who get into porn, and the covert coersion of women by society to think porn is empowering, and he actually said [paraphrase] "you're totally right, I am so sorry, I had never even thought of it like that before"...well that's what you get when you're brought up by television I guess!

I digress...PORN IS PORN yes yes yes!

sorry, couldn't leave a comment as my actual name, would only work anonymously for some reason - that was me, Grace, with the rants at boyfriend and total agreement.

shannon,
There are porn sites that want men to send pics of their penises.

Mr. Morgan,
This post is about porn all being the same, not whether it is acceptable.

Pornstudent, I think the fact that I pointed out that there's no such thing as "good porn" makes it clear which side of the fence I'm on. This post is about my expressing that porn is all the same, ie offensive and degrading. Thanks all of you for affirming my thoughts!

I totally agree. I feel outnumbered too but yes, like spotted ele says, we are not alone - we have each other. I feel glad about that every time it all gets me down.

And I agree about the boyfriend thing. I didn't accept it with my partner, and our relationship is much better because of it. Its all the same, the buying and selling of female bodies, thus the implication that all women can be bought and sold. And it warps sexuality, especially if viewing porn from a younger age (teens etc).

There is lesbian porn made for women, by women. How does this exploit women? Yes, mainstream porn is disgusting, but I haven't read an explanation here about what makes porn inherently vile. Porn exists in which consent is clearly, and enthusiastically given, and all parties involved genuinely enjoy themselves. How is that related to rape? (This is not a rhetorical question, I would really like to understand your statement more clearly.)
